Strong Silver Sales Highlighted in Latest American Eagle Update

Sales of Uncirculated 2024-W American Eagle Silver and Gold Coins

Sales by the United States Mint of the Uncirculated 2024-W American Eagle silver dollars totaled 89,273 coins by June 9, following their release for sale on June 6. Orders were initially limited to 10 coins per household during the first 24 hours, but this restriction was later lifted. The Mint reported that the sales total includes direct sales after the product release, advance orders placed by subscription, and coin allocations sold to authorized dealers.

The Uncirculated 2024-W American Eagle silver dollars are currently available for purchase at $76 each with no mintage limit. On the other hand, the Uncirculated 2024-W American Eagle 1-ounce .9167 fine gold $50 coin, limited to 13,000 coins, opened for sales on June 6 at $3,170 per coin. Initial sales for the gold coin reached 1,073 coins.

Changes in Design and Anti-Counterfeiting Measures

The edge of the Uncirculated 2024-W American Eagle silver dollar features a notch at the 9 o’clock position as an anti-counterfeiting measure. The American Eagle gold $50 coin also includes a similar notch for security purposes. This design feature has been altered annually since its introduction in June 2021.

The edge notching coincided with the introduction of redesigned reverses for both the gold and silver American Eagle series, replacing the previous designs in use since 1986. The new designs were implemented to enhance security and ensure the authenticity of the coins.

The reverse of the silver coin now features a new eagle design, while the obverse design was adapted to closely resemble the original Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman. The obverse design for the American Eagle gold coins was also strengthened to reflect the design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the $20 gold double eagle.

Insight into Minting and Collecting

The Mint’s decision to introduce annual design changes and anti-counterfeiting measures reflects their commitment to ensuring the integrity and authenticity of their coins. Collectors and investors may find these new features appealing as they add value and uniqueness to each year’s release.

The introduction of limited mintage for the gold coins also adds a layer of exclusivity, making them more desirable for collectors looking to enhance their portfolios. As the Mint continues to innovate and improve its coin production, the demand for these unique and secure coins is likely to increase among numismatists and investors alike.
