Designs for 2025 American Liberty Gold Coin and Silver Medal
The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee reviewed designs proposed for a 2025 American Liberty gold coin and silver medal to be produced and issued by the United States Mint. The meeting took place on April 16 and was broadcast live on YouTube.
The panel recommended an obverse and reverse design for the gold coin, while only an obverse design was chosen for the silver medal. However, the CCAC requested that a new complementary reverse design be rendered for the silver medal as the initially submitted design was rejected. If there isn’t enough time to create a new design, the silver medal will default to the same designs recommended for the gold coin.
During the meeting, the CCAC members evaluated 28 obverse designs and 22 reverses for the 2025 American Liberty series.
Specifications of the Gold Coin and Silver Medal
The Mint will issue a Proof High Relief .9999 fine 1-ounce gold $100 coin with a diameter of 1.205 inches (30.6 millimeters) and a Proof 1-ounce .999 fine silver medal with a diameter of 1.598 inches (40.6 millimeters).
The Proof silver medals will be struck on the same 40.6-millimeter planchets used for American Eagle silver dollar coins. The gold coin will be struck in High Relief with a Proof finish at the West Point Mint, while the silver medal will be struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a Proof finish.
The gold coin will feature a reeded edge, while the silver medal will have a plain edge.
Design Contributions and Recommendations
Chief Engraver Joseph F. Menna sought design contributions from outside artists representing various artistic disciplines like street art, graffiti, murals, and tattooing. The CCAC’s recommended designs include a sunflower and bee for the gold coin’s obverse, and an energetic depiction of an eagle for the reverse.
For the silver American Liberty medal, the recommended obverse design reimagines the Statue of Liberty in stylized graffiti form, incorporating elements like a crown-shaped torch base and the letter “L” in the word LIBERTY. This design pays homage to graffiti art and America’s transition from monarchy to a new nation.
American Liberty Coin and Medal Program
The United States Mint initiated the American Liberty 24k High Relief Gold Coin and Silver Medal program in 2015, authorized by the Secretary of the Treasury under the Mint’s statutory authority to issue gold coins and silver medals. The designs for this biennial program feature modern depictions of Liberty and the American eagle.
Overall, the American Liberty series showcases innovative designs that celebrate American values and heritage.
