Collectors eagerly anticipate the release of the 2024-S Proof American Silver Eagle by the United States Mint, scheduled for today at noon EDT. This iteration of the American Silver Eagle continues the tradition of offering proof quality coins struck at the San Francisco Mint, following the popularity of the West Point Mint-produced version earlier this year.
The 2024-S Proof Silver Eagle, made of one ounce of 99.9% silver, is being offered without specified limits, except for an initial household order cap of 25 units lasting for the first 24 hours of sale.
“Struck at the United States Mint at San Francisco, the classic Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman featured on the coin’s obverse has long been a collector favorite,” describes the U.S. Mint’s website page dedicated to the coin. “Thanks to technological advancements in design and minting, these coins reveal some of Weinman’s original details that were not previously possible.”
Since their inception in 1986, American Silver Eagles have garnered respect from collectors, offering both bullion and proof versions. Admired for the imagery on the obverse, derived from the 1916-1947 half dollars by Weinman, the coins encapsulate a rich history. In 2021, the U.S. Mint blended historical elements with modern technology to revitalize the design, staying true to Weinman’s original vision, which is also evident in the 2024 coins.
Additional Insights
It is important to note that the American Silver Eagle series holds a special place in the hearts of collectors not just for its numismatic value but also for its historical significance, making each release a memorable addition to any collection.
Updated Pricing
Initially proposed at $80, the coin’s price was adjusted to $95 in July due to the U.S. Mint’s across-the-board price increases for silver products. This change in pricing may impact the purchasing enthusiasm of some collectors.
Design of American Silver Eagle Proof Coin
The obverse of the coin features Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design, showcasing Liberty in full stride with inscriptions of “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2024.” The reverse presents an eagle with an oak branch in a landing position, designed by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, replacing the previous design by John Mercanti.
The reeded edge of the coin serves as an anti-counterfeit measure.
