The Rich History of the San Francisco Mint
Opening in 1854 to meet the demands of the California Gold Rush, the San Francisco Mint quickly became a key player in the production of gold bullion coins. In its first year alone, the mint processed $4 million worth of gold. The mint’s success led to the construction of a new building in 1937, as the original facilities could no longer keep up with production demands.
In 1968, the San Francisco Mint resumed its role in proof coinage production after a 13-year hiatus, taking over the responsibility from the Philadelphia Mint. Despite this shift, the San Francisco Mint continued to strike circulating coinage from 1968 through 1974, distinguishing itself with the “S” mint mark on all proof coins produced.
A Legacy of Silver American Eagle Proof Coins
The San Francisco Mint was instrumental in minting the Silver American Eagle Proof coins from 1986 to 1992, before production shifted to the Philadelphia Mint in 1993 and later to the West Point Mint in 2001. In 2017, the U.S. Mint introduced two unique proof versions of the Silver Eagle, minted exclusively at the San Francisco Mint and bearing the coveted “S” mintmark. Since then, the U.S. Mint has continued to release a San Francisco version of the Silver American Eagle Proof coin each year, including an enhanced reverse-proof version in 2019.
